Discover The Plough Restaurant & Bar, Oswaldtwistle

If you’re driving through Lancashire and find yourself near 2 Broadfield, Oswaldtwistle, Accrington BB5 3RY, United Kingdom, you’ll want to make time for The Plough Restaurant & Bar, Oswaldtwistle. I’ve visited more than once-first on a quiet midweek evening and later on a busy Sunday-and both experiences gave me a solid sense of what this local favourite does best: hearty pub classics, a welcoming atmosphere, and consistently reliable service.

The location itself is easy to find, just off the main road, with convenient parking nearby. Inside, the setting feels like a proper British pub-restaurant hybrid. There’s a relaxed bar area for casual drinks and a more structured dining space for those coming specifically for the menu. The décor leans toward traditional-wooden tables, warm lighting, and comfortable seating-creating the kind of environment where families, couples, and groups of friends all seem at home.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where this place really earns its reputation. On my first visit, I went for the steak and ale pie, a classic pub dish. The pastry was crisp without being dry, and the filling had that slow-cooked richness you expect from properly braised beef. It wasn’t just tasty; it was balanced. According to guidance from the UK’s Food Standards Agency, safe and proper slow-cooking techniques are key to both flavour and food safety, and the texture here suggested the kitchen understands those fundamentals well. On another occasion, I tried their grilled chicken with seasonal vegetables. The portion size was generous but not excessive, and the vegetables retained their colour and bite-something that nutrition experts, including the NHS, often highlight as a sign of careful cooking that preserves nutrients.

Sunday lunch deserves a separate mention. The roast dinner came with tender slices of beef, fluffy Yorkshire puddings, crisp roast potatoes, and a rich gravy that tied everything together. I noticed that many nearby tables had ordered the same, which says a lot about local trust and repeat custom. In hospitality, repeat diners are often the clearest measure of quality. Research from organisations like UKHospitality consistently shows that word-of-mouth and consistent standards are what keep independent restaurants thriving, and that certainly seems true here.

Service at The Plough Restaurant & Bar, Oswaldtwistle strikes a nice balance between attentive and relaxed. On my busier Sunday visit, staff managed a full dining room without long delays. Orders were taken promptly, and food arrived hot and well-presented. When I asked about allergens for a friend with dietary restrictions, the staff checked directly with the kitchen rather than guessing. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially when food allergies are involved. According to Allergy UK, clear communication between diners and staff significantly reduces risk, and it was reassuring to see that process handled confidently.

The drinks selection complements the food nicely. You’ll find a range of draught beers, wines, and spirits, plus soft drinks and hot beverages. I tried a locally brewed ale recommended by the bartender, which paired beautifully with the pie. Pairing food and drink thoughtfully can elevate a meal, and even in a casual setting, it’s nice to see that consideration.

Online reviews often mention the friendly atmosphere and good value for money, and based on my visits, those comments are fair. Pricing sits comfortably within what you’d expect for a Lancashire pub-restaurant, especially given the portion sizes and ingredient quality. While I can’t speak for every single dish on the menu, the consistency across multiple visits suggests a well-managed kitchen and clear standards.

Overall, whether you’re looking for a relaxed evening meal, a traditional Sunday roast, or just a comfortable spot for drinks with friends, The Plough Restaurant & Bar, Oswaldtwistle delivers a dependable dining experience grounded in solid cooking, attentive service, and a genuine community feel.

  • We come here at least once or twice a month, for food or just drinks. The service is brilliant, every time we go, we have the same members off staff (I really wish I knew their names, a young lad always in a suit, and a guy who works behind the bar). We had a meal last night, and both dishes were amazing. Every time we go, I always get the sticky toffee pudding, and I recommend it to everyone.

  • Great food , we went for the five course set menu , although a little heavy, but we fought through, and the end result was delighted. We were a little early , so it was a little quiet, but the service was fantastic. Thank you. Good wine too.

  • Well well well, what a great find. People had been saying for a while how good this place was but we just hadn’t found time to get there. Very glad we did though, service was impeccable the food was blummin fantastic and portions were possibly, dare I say it, too big. But will definitely be getting another visit. A lot of good pubs in the area and this one can be added to that list easily

  • I've lived in Oswaldtwistle nearly all my life and never dined at the Plough until now. I'll be eating there regularly from now on. The food was delicious. It's the only place in Oswaldtwistle where you can see scallops on the menu too. The service and atmosphere was excellent.

  • A very nice modern restaurant in an old converted pub, the whole place looks high end and it lovely upstairs with a cocktail bar and nice inviting booths. The food was delicious and waitresses couldn't do enough for you!
